Kindred Spirits, Soulmates & Twin Flames: What are the Differences?

Kindred Spirits:

The way that I like to think of kindred spirits is that everyone who has been, and is alive, during your current existence is a kindred spirit. Example: The clerk you check out with at the grocery store, your middle school bus driver, and the homeless man you passed on the street… All of these people are kindred to you because you all are or have existed at the same time.

Soulmates:

People seem to get confused by the idea of a soulmate. Usually the misconception stems from a false idea that there only exists one soulmate for each individual. However, we meet many soulmates throughout the course of our lives and not all of them are romantic. Soulmates can be defined as individuals that you come in contact with that deeply affect your being and evoke great change. A lot of soulmate relationships present themselves in the form of friends, family members, and occasionally find themselves as romantic partners. Some soulmate relationships are fleeting and teach us important lessons that help us grow while others last for this entire lifetime, consistently helping you to grow and learn. I this is hard to swallow, however, the truth is that a lot of toxic relationships and people can be soulmates too. Remember, they’re all here for us to learn how to grow, so appreciate them regardless.

Twin Flames:

The concept of Twin flames is SO interesting. Many stories and versions of the idea of twin flames have emerged throughout existence.

The concept of having a “Twin Flame” originated in Plato’s mythic dialogue entitled “The Symposium” which wrote that human beings originally had two faces, four arms, and four legs. Under the threat of being overpowered, the gods split them in half, creating the humans we see today. Hence, it is thought that we all have one “twin” soul out there in the world.

A Twin Flame, or Twin Soul, is a person who you feel connected to not just on a physical and emotional level, but also on a soulful or spiritual level. Our Twin Flames represent our friends, lovers, and teachers in this life. They are the yins to our yangs, the suns to our moons, and the light to our darkness. Twin Flames are also our mirrors in that they reflect back to us all of our hidden fears and shadows, but also our true inner beauty and strength. In this way, our Twin Flames open the door to tremendous emotional, psychological, and spiritual growth.

Your twin flame does not necessarily incarnate in the form of the opposite gender either. Sometimes you might literally incarnate as a twin with your twin flame (how cool is that.)

Personally, I believe this is when there really is only one twin flame/soul per being. It is said that sometimes an individual may be lucky enough to incarnate within the same lifetime and others are not so lucky. However, I believe that if a twin flame is supposed to be a true mirror then it’s impossible to NOT incarnate during the same lifetime. I also believe that meeting your twin flame can only happen when you learn the lesson of unconditional love for yourself. Until you absolutely learn to love yourself for every unique quirk, learn to be gentle with your being, & learn to apologize to yourself, I believe it is impossible to begin a relationship with your twin. This is not to say that when you are close to reaching this level of love that your twin does not present themselves.

A twin flame love changes your entire being. Your life sets out on a new course. You take that right turn instead of the left turn you were planning on taking.

I also personally believe that, although there may be ups and downs with your twin soul, that it is impossible to not have your twin in your life. Once you meet there is absolutely no way to sever ties. I say this because regardless if your romantic relationship ends, etc, the love that you have for this individual transcends all material and earthly things. All you can wish for is that this individual is happy because that means that you yourself are happy (the mirror.)
